The Dos and Don'ts of a Winter Wedding

Weddings don’t have to be just spring and summertime events anymore. More couples are choosing to have their wedding during the fall and winter months – and why not? Winter provides a romantic ambiance, there’s usually a lack of competition for vendors and sites, and what's not to love about winter wonderland weddings? If you’re planning on throwing a winter wedding, check out these dos and don’ts from Dany Mizrachi.

Don’t Be Afraid to Use Color

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you are bound to winter whites, greens, and reds that traditionally surround the holiday season. You can still choose your favorite colors even if they don’t match the traditional color scheme. By going with unusual colors, you can create a fun and unexpected setting for your guests.

Do Create a Warm and Cozy Reception

There are many ways to make your reception an inviting space. When it comes to your wedding, there is no limit. With the sun setting early in the winter, candles create a soft glow and set a romantic tone for the wedding. To add ambiance, you could bring in soft textures like velvet and other soft materials. To kick it up a notch you can even use throw pillows and lush blankets in a lounge area.

Don’t Let It Get Too Hot

We know it’s cold outside, but things can quickly heat up. If it seems like your guests are breaking a serious sweat, you should consider turning down the heat. Another option: find a creative way to keep the reception area warmer and the dance floor area a few degrees cooler.

Do Dress Your Bridesmaids in Style

It’s okay to throw out the old-school rules they say you have to wear a certain style of dress or certain fabrics depending on the time of year you’re getting married. It’s okay to choose a strapless dress in the winter if that’s what you want, and your bridesmaids are comfortable with it. Plus, you’ll more than likely have the heat on indoors, so your bridesmaids will probably appreciate being dressed in something a little lighter. Not to mention, it makes it easier to dance when you’re out on the dance floor.

Don’t Allow Them to Freeze

While it is your day, you can’t be overly picky about what your bridesmaids wear, especially when they’re outdoors (which they will be, even if it’s just running from the car into the venue). If they’re wearing heels that could be hazardous in any type of weather, they should bring sneakers or boots with them to wear from one place to the next. And don’t forget the coats – they are a must.

Do Be Gracious to Your Guests

There are many winter-inspired ways you can thank your guests for coming to your wedding. Holiday or winter-themed wedding favors are always a favorite. Another option is to do a late-night snack. You could give out hot chocolate with shortbread cookies or even hot apple cider. It’s not only delicious, but a wonderful way to warm up your guests.

Don’t Leave Them Out in the Cold

If you want to have a receiving line, it’s important to plan ahead so guests aren’t outside freezing. If your ceremony space has a large enough entryway, you could possibly wait there and have guests greet you after the ceremony. It’s also important to make sure that guests are comfortable at both the ceremony and reception. Having a coat check should also be on your list. No one wants to lug around their big winter coat at a wedding.
