Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Tips

You have just been chosen to be a bridesmaid in your friend’s wedding. Standing beside her is filled with fun, not only on the wedding day, but all the events leading up to the big day. Being picked to be a bridesmaid also means that you will be shopping for a brand-new dress, one you may not be too excited about. When it comes to shopping for the dress, there are a few rules every bridesmaid-to-be should follow. Dany Mizrachi has a few bridesmaid dress shopping tips you should keep in mind.

Follow the Bride’s Lead

After all, you are shopping for her big day. If the bride is asking you to pick something you like or to browse the racks and help her get inspired, it’s important to get a little guidance first. Does she want everyone in the same type of fabric, or is she open-minded about mixing fabrics? Does she want everyone in short dress or long dresses? However, if she wants some new ideas, feel free to look toward complementary colors or a silhouette she may not have originally picked.

Go in With an Open Mind

A good thought to keep in your head throughout your shopping trip is “It’s not my wedding”. Before you freak out or get defensive about what the bride is looking for, whether it’s a certain style or color you don’t exactly like, keep your mind open and give it a shot. Best case scenario, you put the dress on and your opinion of it is totally transformed. Worst case scenario? You try the dress on and it just doesn’t work – and hopefully, the bride will realize that this may not be the right choice.

Wear the Right Undergarments

If you know that you are shopping for your bridesmaid dress, it’s important that you wear nude underwear and pack a strapless bra to take with you. This way you’ll be able to try on any color dress and any neckline without being distracted by colored underwear or a lacy bralette that sticks out in all the wrong places.

Give Constructive Feedback

If you’re wearing a dress that you totally hate, you should keep those feelings to yourself. Instead, vocalize what it is you don’t like, whether it’s a shade that doesn’t work on your skin tone or a neckline that may be too revealing. If you can explain these things, you might either be able to find a way to fix the problems and hopefully guide the bride in a new direction.

It’s Okay to Bring Up Money

Being upfront about money in the beginning can help ease a lot of stress. It’s important to make sure you’ve spoken with the bride about any financial difficulties you may have, especially since bridesmaids dresses can be costly. You can’t force her to pick a different dress, but once she’s selected a style or color, you might be able to find the same dress for less on a resale site. Just be sure to let her know if you plan to shop around before placing your order.
